Prominent Ear Aesthetics: What Is Otoplasty?
Prominent ears, which can become a source of discomfort especially during childhood, are the subject of this article.
What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty is the surgical correction of deformities of the auricle or outer ear. The aim is to create a more aesthetic appearance by reshaping ears that are asymmetric or excessively angled outward.
Why is ear aesthetics performed?
The outer ear has an important role in directing sound waves into the ear canal, but its position and proportion also matter in facial appearance. When the angle between the ear and head is wider than normal, the ear may appear to protrude outward, a condition commonly called prominent ear.
Although this appearance may seem harmless, it can become a reason for teasing at school or in social settings during childhood and adolescence. In some individuals, this may affect self-esteem and confidence.
When should treatment be performed?
The most suitable period for otoplasty is often around 5–6 years of age, when ear growth is largely complete. Performing the operation before school-age teasing becomes a long-term psychological burden may be beneficial.
The timing and treatment plan should always be determined individually after examination.
