Where Are These New Holidays?
When will we stop leaving the present behind while longing for the holidays of the past? Where are these new holidays, and when will we celebrate the joy of today as fully as it deserves?
A holiday symbolizes happiness, freshness, renewal and beginnings. Yet with every new celebration, we often find ourselves yearning for what once was. But today’s holidays are also beautiful, meaningful and precious. Whether we fill them with spirit or leave them empty is, as always, up to us.
When we finally lift our heads from self-development books, workshops, retreats and courses, perhaps we will notice the world, the present moment and the holidays of today more clearly.
I ask both myself and you: do we circle too much within our own inner worlds? Do we miss life while constantly thinking about how to live it? Will social media broadcasts, affirmations and mantras teach us everything from now on?
A quote by the philosopher Miguel de Unamuno often comes to mind: “The only true teacher of life is life itself.”
As we enter the holiday week, what would it be like to quiet our work, rush and egos a little, and simply begin to look — at our city, our country, peace, longing, humanity, streets and the life unfolding around us?
