Who Can Undergo Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Women with small or moderately sized breasts, as well as those whose breasts have lost volume after pregnancy and breastfeeding, are ideal candidates for breast augmentation surgery.

Breast Augmentation surgery aims not only to enlarge small breasts, but also to achieve balance between the two breasts and create the size most compatible with the patient’s body proportions.

When selecting the implant, the patient’s wishes are considered together with factors such as body structure, chest wall anatomy and skin characteristics. New-generation breast implants are available in a very wide product range, making it possible to find a silicone implant suitable for almost every body type.

Breast augmentation procedures are generally preferred by young and middle-aged patients. As a rule, breast development is expected to be complete before surgery. Except in special cases, implant surgery is not performed before the age of 18.

In recent years, fat injections have also been preferred in breast augmentation procedures as an alternative to implants. One limitation of fat transfer is that results may not be as clearly predictable as with implants and sufficient enlargement may not always be achieved. Therefore, the procedure often needs to be repeated several times.

To increase longevity, stem cell-enriched fat injections may be performed. In such cases, persistence rates of up to 80% may be achieved.

Every surgery leaves a scar on the body. Breast augmentation is among the procedures associated with the least visible scars. Implants may be placed through incisions under the breast, around the nipple or through the armpit. In recent years, inframammary incisions have been the most commonly preferred approach worldwide and are considered the safest technique. The scar remains precisely within the natural fold under the breast.

How is breast size determined?

The appropriate breast size is determined according to the patient’s anatomy. The main criteria include:

  • The patient’s height, weight and overall body proportions. Larger implants may be suitable for taller or heavier patients.
  • The shape of the patient’s rib cage.
  • The size of the existing breasts and the amount of breast tissue.
  • The degree of breast sagging.
  • Breast symmetry is also evaluated.

What happens after surgery?

  • Patients are usually discharged the same day. A hospital stay of no more than 1 night is generally anticipated.
  • They may move around and take walks.
  • They may continue their daily activities.
  • A supportive sports bra should be worn.
  • Heavy lifting and driving should be avoided.
  • Patients should sleep on their back during the first 2 weeks.
  • The first follow-up visit is performed after 5-7 days, and showering is usually permitted.
