Turtles Have More Road Stories Than Rabbits

I wanted to begin this week’s article with this beloved quote by Khalil Gibran. It is one of those sentences that can be applied to almost every part of life.

Without poetry and literature, aesthetics and beauty would feel incomplete — perhaps they could not have developed in the same way at all. As an aesthetic plastic surgeon, I feel grateful both to the poets of my own land and to artists of every generation around the world.

To me, beauty and aesthetics are the extraordinary harmony found within the ordinary chaos of the universe. We begin our worldly journey with a desire for unity and wholeness in body, soul and mind, and perhaps we continue searching for it throughout life.

Some are luckier, while others walk a more demanding path. Yet the road is always there. It always lies ahead.

The turtle and the rabbit are familiar literary symbols. In our ever-accelerating lives, they seem to ask us what we miss while chasing speed and results. Perhaps they invite us to remember breath, the day, the flower and the sky.
