Scars after surgery are among the topics patients ask me about most often, and they are also a subject I care deeply about.

When we say scar, many people first think of marks left after childhood falls or small injuries. Today, however, I want to talk specifically about surgical scars.

A scar is the healing tissue created by the body after injury. From a plastic surgeon’s point of view, scar formation is a complex wound-healing process influenced by many factors: the sharpness, size and location of the incision; age; sex; skin tone; and genetic tendencies.

One of the most common questions is whether aesthetic surgery leaves scars. In truth, every operation involving an incision leaves a scar. Yet this should not be a cause for panic.
