Who Should Consider Breast Reduction Surgery?

Women over the age of 18 with large and sagging breasts are suitable candidates for breast reduction and breast lift procedures.

Breast Reduction surgery is performed for both aesthetic and health-related reasons. Although it is often classified as an aesthetic procedure, it may address a genuine medical problem that can lead to severe neck, back and lower back pain, as well as shoulder grooving and related discomfort.

The effects of gravity, rapid weight gain and loss, pregnancy, or multiple pregnancies may cause both deformity and sagging of the breasts in women. Having large and drooping breasts can negatively affect a patient’s social, physical and personal life.

Women with large breasts, especially younger women, may alter their posture or walking style in an effort to hide this condition and may prefer loose-fitting clothing to conceal their body shape.

Surgical scars vary according to the size of the patient’s breasts and the operative technique used. Depending on breast size and the degree of sagging, there may be a scar around the nipple, a vertical scar beneath it, and a horizontal scar under the breast, also known as an inverted T scar.

The final length of the scar depends on breast size, the degree of sagging and the elasticity of the patient’s skin. All scars fade over time and become increasingly difficult to notice.

How is the target breast size determined?

Patients with large breasts may wish to have their breasts reduced more than what is medically or aesthetically appropriate due to the discomfort they experience. Since the breasts have an important place in the female body contour, the decision should be made with attention to achieving a proportionate appearance in harmony with the body.

What happens after breast reduction surgery?

  • After breast reduction surgery, patients are generally discharged 5-6 hours later.
  • They may shower after 2 days.
  • A follow-up examination is performed after 3 days, and the patient may return to work and daily activities.
  • For 3 weeks after breast reduction surgery, patients should avoid sports except for walking.
  • All sports activities except arm and chest movements may be performed. After the sixth week, all sports activities are allowed.
  • The breasts reach their final shape around the third month.
